MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. MAME can emulate thousands of games that otherwise would have been lost in the ash-heaps of history.

There are a variety of arcade emulator versions available in RetroPie. There are significant differences in performance, compatibility, and configuration between them. If you're getting started with an arcade emulation project, begin by reading the Arcade page.
This page is a resource for additional details on RetroPie's MAME emulators including configuration paths, controls, and the ROM sets which each emulator requires.

MAME ROM paths
Three of the available MAME ROM paths in RetroPie are shared directories which are used by more than one emulator:
arcade
, mame-libretro
, mame-advmame
. In order to successfully load zipped ROM sets in these locations you must specify the arcade emulator version which matches your ROMs.To avoid having several menus for different arcade emulators, all arcade-based ROMs can be placed in the
arcade
ROM folder, but you will have to specify which emulator each zipped ROM set will use from the Runcommand Menu.Emulators

lr-mame2003-plus (MAME 2003-Plus)
MAME 2003-Plus (also referred to as MAME 2003+ and mame2003-plus) is a libretro arcade system emulator core with an emphasis on high performance and broad compatibility with mobile devices, single board computers, embedded systems, and similar platforms.
In order to take advantage of the performance and lower hardware requirements of an earlier MAME architecture, MAME 2003-Plus began with the MAME 2003 codebase which is itself derived from xmame 0.78. Upon that base, MAME 2003-Plus contributors have backported support for several hundred additional games as well as other functionality not originally present in MAME 0.78.
Please see the libretro MAME 2003-Plus core documentation for information on how to configure specific features of this emulator.

Hi there, I've built a retro pie 4.1 arcade cabinet and have a handful of MAME ROMS working but I am struggling to get more MAME ROMs to work. I have a success rate of about 1 in 10 for MAME. Beyblade from beyblade metal fusion. Is there any correlation between MAME emulator version numbers on the ROM sites and the emulators supplied with Retro Pie? Its tedious trying 5 different emulators with each ROM only to find none work.
For example a ROM site will say XYZ MAME ROM works best with MAME 0.172. Should this then tell me which RPie emulator it will work with?
Original MAME 0.139 source and executable packages (mame0139b and mame0139s) This is a complete set of ROMs, CHDs, and audio samples for MAME 0.139. *Several audio samples, described in a text file within the collection, have never been publicly circulated and are not included. They are all the cores available to us on Android using RetroArch. I've yet to find a resource where we can figure out which roms that were added at each of these intervals. MAME2000 = 0.37b5 MAME2003 = 0.78 MAME2010 = 0.139 MAME2014 = 0.157 MAME2016 = 0.174 MAME = current rom set (0.195?). Coolrom is just simply garbage IMO for CPS and MAME due to not being romset specific and am trying to find a good site for this romset while. MAME4droid 0.37b5 uses a romset from MAME 0.37b5 from around the year. So, since I have 139 romset, I can convert it to 139 u1 in it?
I realise there are google sheets which say what name of a ROM works with a RPie emulator but I find these very unreliable and ambiguous in the matching of the name on the sheet vs the names on the ROM sites. I'm hoping there is an easier way. Please can someone who has navigated through this with success with the version correlations or if you have got some tips please PM me. You need to read the very clear guidance provided on MAME. Your post has been replicated hundreds of times and answered hundreds of times.
A search on here would reveal hundreds of threads on this topic. Just by typing in MAME HELP into the search bar will reveal them. Here are some examples:, and So, First you must read this: This answers everything.
You should also read this after the above as it will reinforce the above: Attempting to download single roms is never recommended. You need to acquire FULL VERIFIED romsets for the emulator which you choose to use according to the wiki. Each MAME emulator is included due to the particular benefits of each one. For example a ROM site will say XYZ MAME ROM works best with MAME 0.172. Should this then tell me which RPie emulator it will work with?
No, why would it? Please can someone who has navigated through this with success with the version correlations or if you have got some tips please PM me. There is no PM. However the correlations you seek are already provided here: Its tedious trying 5 different emulators with each ROM only to find none work. This is never the correct method. See all previous links to avoid this in the future.
Once you have tried all that, you can learn more from here: And before posting, look at the top of the page in bold: Please do not post a support request without first reading and following the advice in In particular, point 3. Ah OK I get it now. I'd previously read the MAME thread by Floob but didnt pick up on the importance of the ROM Sets. I thought a ROMset was just the files that came with a game ROM i.e. 12 files in a game.zip. Thats how this reads to me. What are romsets?
Mame Rom Pack
A romset is typically a single compressed file (.zip). This zip file will contain various rom files required to run the game. This differs to many other systems where there is usually just a single file. For example, the romset galaga.zip for MAME 0.78 contains 14 rom files. So based on that I am doing the right thing in downloading the romsets. But then I read this.
Mame 139 Rom
MAME2003 is based off the MAME 0.78 source code, so you must use the MAME 0.78 ROM set with MAME2003 So from this I gather i'm trying to find ROMs based on the MAME 0.78 source code. Said in: I'd previously read the MAME thread by Floob but didnt pick up on the importance of the ROM Sets. I thought a ROMset was just the files that came with a game ROM i.e.
Mame 139 Romset Download
12 files in a game.zip. I am the one who got the ROMSet concept wrong. The Floob's information is right, and your understanding too. I've just checked the and look what I've found: An example ROM image would be the file pm1_prg1.6e stored in the Puckman ROM set.
